NYC female firefighters trying to boost numbers
New York City firefighter Sarinya Srisakul speaks about her work
NEW YORK (AP) -- In New York City, the nation's largest fire department counts 37 female firefighters among its squad of more than 10,500.
Nationwide, the profession remains overwhelmingly male -- women make up only about 3.4 percent of the total workforce. But even compared to national standards, the New York Fire Department figure of one-third of 1 percent is low.
But that number is expected to grow. A record number of women took the latest fire department exam following heavy recruitment spurred by a court order two years ago. Six women entered the fire academy just this week.
The women's firefighters union is organizing training sessions twice a week to help women pass the rigorous physical exam and meet fire academy expectations to graduate into the job.
