80% of our water going to subsidize 3% of our economy is appalling. If you live in a near-desert environment perhaps you should have addressed your own water concerns yourself a long time ago. Building dams is incredibly expensive, who is expected to pay for them? I doubt you'll get much support from folks up here Tom. They're already upset about sending "our" water off to cities and farms out of this area.
I'd rather pay taxes to improve existing dams or build new ones than a high speed rail. I'm sure there are many other projects out there that could be put in the trash bin and then refocus the money from those projects to the water needs of Californians. We need water to survive.
Water issues have been around for ever !
It is amazing to me the fight over water use .
It is simple to say use less .
But reality we have an every growing demand .
Water once stored for farming now goes to the ocean , for homes and
Does any one remember how much of California was desert before
dams and canals were built ?
We all complain about creating jobs , how many farm related jobs
will be lost do to lack of water ?
How many will do with out food due to increased cost ? Oh don't worry
the government will come to the rescue LOL
Informative story about some of California's almond orchards and water.
"We need a plan"..."something must be done"...Well, you and your brother politicians were elected because you promised to "do something." Empty words that overstate the obvious are easy to come by.
So, Tom, what the heck have you been doing besides going to parties, complaining and fleecing your constituents for money to get re-elected?
YOU were elected to do something. Water issues are REAL !!! Quit wringing your hands and get something done or get the heck out of the way and let someone with character, courage and foresight take your place. Politics is not meant to be a social club for do nothings.
GET TO WORK OR PACK YOUR BAGS !!!!
"...California, faced with an historic drought, has let water run into the ocean for years."
Unfortunately, not enough water was allowed to run into the ocean and pretty much destroyed the once great fishing industry that California had.
Not to mention the draining of the largest lake west of the Rocky Mtns - Tulare Lake - to grow... cotton.
This is what happens when we build farms in a desert, when we overpopulate our planet and when our total disregard for the world around us catches up with us. It is clear we are taking too many resources from our environment. It is a finite amount that our Earth can provide. No more taking, we need to learn to live with what we have... or it will cost us ALL. I am sympathetic to the farmers, it will not be fun paying more for food, but that's how it will be in the 21st century. Well, more mouths to feed, means less in each mouth. If you are angry because you don't have enough, thank all those breeders out there pumping babies out like it just doesn't matter. If you have more than one kid.... no one else to blame but yourself for this mess we are now, ALL in!
The Democrats disregard conservatives and their communities altogether.
No surprise here.
Top Shelf, Nancy is right, would you let the country's bread basket dry up ?
Coiler who are the breeders ?
Are you against women and family ?
Are you an only child ?
I agree with Top Shelf this time. Coiler too, except we get our veggies and fruit from other countries while Central Valley farmers take our tax subsidies and then sell outside the region and country. For this, we are expected to lose our recently rebounding salmon and steelhead populations, while anti-environment extremists who support these water heists say people who oppose this legislation do so for "bait fish?"
There are too many rats in the cage in California and now the chickens are coming home to roost. Meanwhile the democrats work hard to increase the population and demand for water via immigration policy. We're just supposed to lower our quality of life by significantly reducing our usage to accommodate all these new democrats. And the republicans are just as goofy.
Remodeling your home? Build a rage false wall outside of your current one and create a water storage tank. Collect the rainwater (when it happens) and use it for graywater purposes.
The top ten agricultural products grown or raised in California.
Not one of them is used in the production of bread. None is essential for human life. Water, on the other hand, is essential. 80% of our water goes to agriculture with a very small positive impact on our total economy. Those that want to keep subsidizing agri-business should get out their checkbooks.
As coiler said the biggest problem here and in the world is too many people. It has nothing to do with being an only child or being against woman , that is just ignorant.
Go look for yourself to see where the water is going. Liberal San Francisco or the conservative Central Valley? This does not include agricultural usage either.
Crocket. I think it is obvious who the breeders are; you know, the ones with more babies than they need to carry on the family name. The breeders are the ones with more babies than they can feed, or handle. The breeders are the ones who are taking more than the others on our planet. I am actually pro-women, that means I am FOR abortion. I think someone elses body is theirs to do as they please, and no one's religious concerns should have any bearing on their decision to keep, or abort a pregnancy. I also have 4 sisters.... and 4 adopted daughters, so, no animosity or hatered towards women here. So I think you have it all wrong here Crockett. I am pro-women, and have lots of female siblings. Plain and simple, Crocket... The only think I am "against" here is global overpopulation.
Coiler, I was under the impression this story was about lack of rain and water not Global population. Are you saying your mother was a breeder and is responsible for over population ?
PS: I wouldn't prevent a woman from having a safe abortion unless I have to pay for her and his irresponsible behavior although I prefer life over killing life.
Farmer vote for republicans and not democrats. This is our way of putting the squeeze on the groups that don't support us. Pelosi did it a few years ago with her votes on the central valley, this is just another backhanded punishment.
Watch what would happen if the farmers ever tried to create their own water solution by building holding tanks or other self reliant solutions. The environuts and the democrats would call in the national guard.
Global overpopulation is THE major cause of all these problems we are having with our environment. More mouths need more water, houses, oil for their cars, and of course, more plastic * . Yes, I AM saying my mother was a breeder... I am embarrassed for her too. In her defense, the so called "greatest generation" didn't know any better. That, and she's my Mother, makes me not too upset with her. We,our generation, know better; and we have seen the results of global climate change. In the 21st century if you are pumping babies out with no regard for the world you are bringing them into is rude to the child, and all the other creatures on the planet.... So, yes.... this topic has EVERYTHING to do with a drought. Keeping our heads in the sand and denying the problem is NOT a solution.
