The accident was at the upper entrance to Summerville High. Not sure why they allow people, or why someone would choose, to make a left turn on to Tuolumne Rd from that entrance. I think that's the second accident there in the last couple of weeks!
When driving within 500 to 1,000 feet of a school while children are outside or crossing the street, the speed limit is 25 mph unless otherwise posted. Also, if the school grounds have no fence and children are outside, never drive faster than 25 mph. Some school zones may have speed limits as low as 15 mph. Always drive more carefully near schools, playgrounds, parks, and residential areas because children may suddenly dart into the street.
There are no posted speed limits on this part of the road. I drop and pick up my child everyday and everyday people speed up and down this part of the road. We are lucky that these accidents haven't been more serious.
SLOW DOWN!!! Enforce the speed limit!!!
The speed limit is posted 45 mph from buckhorn grade to Tuo city and posted 25 at both ends of the school, pay attention and you will see the signs. There are also a lot of deer in this area just to add to the cofusion of paying attention for some its just another distraction, ohh looky at little bambi and stopping in the middle of the street over a blind hill and whammo now we have an accident or an is it really an accident, they chose to stop so instead of keeping traffic flowing. If the deer is directly in front of you i guess you have to stop, but a honk of the horn and they usually spook and run off. Anyway im getting way off subject here. PAY ATTENTION its easy and free, and takes your concentration, and usually saves your life!
PLee, the posted speed limit for this part of the road is 45mph, and 25 when children are present. The westbound sign is near the entrance to west side, and the eastbound sign is just east of Cherokee road. Both school zone signs are within a few hundred yards of the school itself.
My mistake, I actually drove down there and yes there are signs posted. Are they obeyed? NO.
My point is that cars headed towards the casino are driving well over 45 miles an hour. You can talk and post all you want about PAYING ATTENTION and looking at Bambi.. That is not the problem. They are speeding -I have NEVER seen Hwy Patrol or Sheriffs on this road pulling people over. It is dangerous.. Plain and simple.
The main burden of caution is still on drivers who are entering the roadway. They must yield for oncoming traffic on the highway. I never see any kids walking to school there. If the kids are allowed to drive or if parent drives them, then they must be more careful when entering the road.
