I really hate reading stuff like this, and I hate it even more when it involves children...
Lets hope they all are OK
My thoughts and prayers are with the injured and especially the missing person.
What a freak thing to happen. Thank God no children were injured.
Other news agencies have reported one adult fatality. Can you confirm this? This is an unfortunate byproduct of our hot, dry weather..large trees and branches have been coming down everywhere. The roots can no longer hold on. hope the missing person turns up okay.
Thank you so much for staying on top of this story. My grandson is there now, and we are desperate for news.
No confirmation that there was a fatality. We have been in contact with several sources.
It's unfortunate when different media sources report different stories...KCRA is reporting 20 injured (no kids) and one fatality.
At least one person was killed today and several injured by a falling tree at Camp Tawonga deep in the Stanislaus National Forest.
Hospital officials in Sonora confirmed that at least one person died and four people were airlifted from the scene. The casualties were being taken to Sonora and Modesto.
Gail Witzlsteiner, Sonora Regional Medical Center's Director of Development and Public Relations denied and said the hospital did not report a death. We have been in contact with her and other news sources will correct their information. So far there is one missing and four were injured.
KCRA must have really terrible standards of journalism. Maybe they should write for some rag that reports elvis lives..etc.
I thought journalists had to have TWO reliable and independent sources?
Whatever happened to that?
On a site called NBC Bayarea they've named the victim and stating she was a college student and camp counselor from Santa Cruz. No children were among the injured.
On their Facebook page, the camp has released a letter stating the deceased and injured in their notes/comments section. Very sad. All other news stations are reporting the same except on this site.
Moderator: The possible death is not confirmed on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/camptawonga
There was an email reportedly sent to parents but it has not been publicly released.
There was a post an hour ago to the most recent post 5 hours ago (not about the incident) "As a former Tawonga staffer... The camp is working hard to get out information as quickly as possible to every family and to handle the incident. There will be more updates coming later today. The best thing we can do right now is leave the staff alone to take care of what they need to take care of. They will reach out professionally and in good time. I promise. In the meantime, let's come together and share our love and concern and passion for community however we can."
Prayers for all those involved.
My dtr-in-law received an official email from the camp stating all children are safe; though sadly 4 staff members were injured and one died. They currently have mental health professionals there to help the kids deal with this.
