While this sounds like a good idea, in reality it is not. Minimum wage goes up, so does everything else to compensate. Those that make more than minimum wage don't get a raise. So their income stays the same and everything costs more. In reality, raising minimum wage is a pay cut for the rest of the working class
Raising the minimum wage accomplishes nothing. If I have been working for a year and have experience, and a new hire comes in at the minimum wage, I am going to want a raise. This happens in every pay bracket.
Eventually the product or service will have to raise their price because of the increased cost of doing business.
Now we are back where we stared. It just does't make sense.
This would be a gift to big corporations, who can afford the wage increase but will make up for the revenue in increased business from all the family businesses that will be put under by it.
And it cuts into a business owner's profits.
these politicians are "pikers" Set the minimum wage to the state senators salary..hell ..pay them the same as President Bush had or President Obama..400k a year is nice.
Did the state of Texas lobbyists propose this one also?
Increase minimum wage, drive more companies to shut down business here and move to Texas?
The politicians can give everyone a raise because they don't have to pay it, the workers don't have to earn it, but it will buy a vote.
I think it is idiotic to have the same minimum wage for, say, the Bay Area, as for poorer counties like Tuolumne and Calaveras. I also think it is idiotic to raise it at all with the unemployment rate as high as it is. Who cares if it hasn't been raised for 5 years - why is that relevant? It will force prices in general up, not to mention salaries for lower paid exempt (managerial) employees. The lowest salary you can pay someone in the latter category is twice the state minimum hourly wage, calculated on an annual basis of 2080 hours.
When I was in the work force, I took into consideration "how much above minimum wage" my pay was. If min wage is raised, that lessens the value of wages for those that have moved up the food chain.
"It has already been six years in California where there has been no raise at all. The minimum wage has been stuck at eight dollars an hour, and in the meantime, our neighbors in Nevada, Oregon and Washington have increased the minimum wage above California."
Ever notice how our idiot politicians ONLY talk about what other state governments are doing and how we need to one-up them? They don't even bother to talk about the actual beneficiary of the law. I could understand a quote like "we need to do this for the poor people..." but this guy just talks about how we need to go further than the other states. Remember the gun law rhetoric about how New York "stepped up to the plate" with their new law and we need to go even further than them to be in first place again?
Minimum wage positions are non-skilled, entry level positions. They are not and have never been positions that an individual should want to stay in. A major reason to obtain further education and/or motivation. The higher it becomes the more businesses with entry level/non-skilled positions will fail.
How about reducing it to $2.50/hr. Then all the business owners and CEO's can increase their profit margin.... cause you know they won't lower prices if labor costs are down. Stupid Republican logic. The only reason prices go up with minimum wage is so these jerks can continue to have billions of dollars saved away in the bank. Trickle down economics doesn't work (and never has). It can't trickle down from a savings account. I say there should be a cap on savings accounts. How much does one person really need to horde.
Everyone says that minimum wage is for entry level jobs, but many people get stuck in these jobs because there is no other work. Many families have both parents working minimum wage to survive. This nonsense about minimum wage being for entry level positions is bullpucky! Look at what Wal-Mart pays it's workers. Corporate greed is what keeps wages low. As for small businesses, if you do't do your research to see what it costs to run a business, then you shouldn't go into business. The price of everything goes up, so should wages.
Raise it as high as you want , employers will just cut hours ,if you only work 3-4 hours it is not enough . If you want to make life better require
more hours per employee and not like sanfran fire fighters nocking six figures
on over time . It is not hard to figure minimum staff hours to keep the doors oopen . The democrats have to be smart enough to know that raising wages only
lowers hours for the ones who need work hours the most .
What a great idea this is for such a robust economy! This is bound to stimulate several hundred million businesses to hire new people and end the economic downturn the Current Regime Master wants to put an end to....Sacramento Morons...an oxymoron.
FDR instituted the first minimum wage .25 cent per hour in 1938. So it is my understanding from the conservatives on this blog that minimum wage should had never been raised since 1938? Is that correct?
The4Horsemen, as usual, NO.
Every time there is talk about upping the minimum wage there are those that claim it will hurt the little guy...well how come you never see reports of businesses claiming to close because they hiked the minimum wage .25? The only people hurting are those taking minimum wage jobs because their unemployment ran out and they need to do what they can to support themselves or their family, which you cannot accomplish on minimum wage. All jobs offer COLA raises, minimum wage should adjust for COLA and never has. Some of you cry out that minimum wage is "an incentive" to get a better education, well that doesn't always work either especially at the cost of higher education these days. I think it's about time they raised the minimum wage, I hope it passes.
