Hahahaha.
What an amazing coincidence – shopping carts are valued right at the amount that makes the theft a felony rather than a misdemeanor - $1,000!
Most be the one with Sirius Radio, Leather upholstery (soft Corinthian - Ricardo Montalban style), Turn signals, Backing up lights, Rear and side view mirrors, Curb feelers, Blue tooth, ABS & Power steering
three on e-bay right now.1. $595 2. $399 3. $299.99

I thought it said he was booked for possession of stolen property which has no dollar value to make it a felony. And now days does it really make a difference if it is a felony or not? With the judicial system as it is now. The DA's Office will offer a misdemeanor conviction to get a win and any jail time that would have been issued will be suspended because of the counties having to house the state's prisoners.

He was arrested for that? How sad. Poor guy... I agree he shouldn't have taken it, but have you seen all the NON motorized carts ALL OVER THE COUNTY? He's certainly not alone in taking advantage of the convenience. Why not just let him off with a warning? Holy cow, and to think of all the people who get away with REAL crime.

He needs to be in a mental home, not a jail.

Mathews claimed that Safeway had given him the cart, which is valued at $1,000. Safeway was contacted, and store officials had no knowledge that the cart had been taken.
I believe that is stealing.
Now since you know where the guy is, why don't you call and give him your number so when he needs a ride he can call you.
Or maybe help him out. Valued at 1,000 new.. why don't you buy one the ones on ebay for him since you think they are so cheap..
Or...Maybe he should have thought that he'll needs a ride home sooner when the buses were running.

Obviously some commentators here do not realize how hard it is for the elderly and the disabled to get a power chair or scooter through the proper medical channels these days? It is not easy or in fact at times practically impossible and the powers that be do not care either no matter how much a doctor insists a patient might require one. Also buying a power chair or scooter from a private owner IE: FleaBay, Craigslist etc etc gives you no guarantee and no help in any repairs, replacement batteries, replacement every 5-7 years etc etc. I feel sorry for this gentleman but in reality here the DA should just give him probation or in the best case not prosecute at all after a thorough investigation and checking this man's medical records. Somethings ya just gotta let go of and let slide.

FCG: When did stealing become OK? Poor Guy? Ya just don't get it! He STOLE the cart....not borrowed it. I'm sure you think he would have returned it the next morning, washed, waxed with a Thank You card on the handle bars, such an upright guy! 1 o'clock in the morning, city street,no lighting, top speed of up to 5 mph, stolen off road vehicle. A warning? What would you give a poor driver if he just happened to run over this road hazard. Good on ya, Sonora PD.

A thief is a thief - no matter if he is 17 or 77. I cannot believe people are defending him, I am sure, because of his age.

Theft is theft people. Should we just put on our blinders and only look for meth addicts? Do the crime, get caught, do the time.
By the way, the carts on ebay and not the same. The EZ-SHOPPER 8000 STARTS at $15,000.

The fact that the perp is elderly, and the stolen item odd, does not make it less of a crime.
