What Is Vision Sonora?

I think that we have too many city police officers for our small town. I have found them to be rude, inconsiderate, and uncaring. They have this attitude that they are big, bad cops who are better than everyone else; especially the new young hires who are being trained to be that way by seasoned officers. They could use some training on how to deal with the public in a courteous and caring manner such as sensitivity training. Same goes for the Sheriff's department. Law enforcement in this county need major attitude adjustments in regards to dealing with the public; they are way too rude and routinely violate the civil rights of detainees. The State Justice Dept. should investigate the ongoing abuse of power going on in this county.

A bike lane between downtown Sonora and Columbia/Columbia College that is NOT on the side of the highway, but along Woods Creek. I know - I'm dreaming.

I think it's pretty obvious that we need to fix the two biggest eye sores that have been around for a year, maybe two. The burned up Indian restaurant
and the corner of days Inn. The next thing is power washing and painting every building on Washington st. that needs it. And allow no parking for every third stall on Washington. It blocks the view of the stores and makes it feel like your driving through a congested parking lot.

A north-south bypass would be a good start, to get all that traffic off Washington. No point prettying the place up if it is clogged with traffic 12 hours a day.

I wish Calaveras County would take an interest in this type of visions.

Let's add to the list.

Crackheads, aimless smelly people wandering downtown. People peering into your car in parking lots (the quick smash and grab), murderers (woman slashes boyfriend's throat and watches him die, dope dealers, very suspect bidding processes, regulations for regulations. The govt is always right and you pay for their mistakes...but they DON'T make mistakes (smiles)...
Behind the scenes plotting.....
and deals being hatched.
No due process in council deliberations on some things (nothing I can prove).
Unfair taxes being called FEES..while the money is going to the State EQUALIZATION Board (Sick humour in that name...wonder who thought that up.)
Well, could go on, but if ANY of you SO-CALLED leaders would address what is in front of your faces...instead of...
@I want a pony!....I fart rainbows...etc.@
GRRRR!

Residents are invited to give their input on the areas of the city they feel needs improvement.

just the input you WANT.

@Squirter I have a different take on the Law Enforcement professionals in our county. I have found them to be very considerate and caring every single time me or my family has needed them. I can only speak for the CHP and Tuolumne County Sheriffs deputies, but I suspect that Sonora is no different.

My house was broken into about 2 1/2 months ago in broad daylight, on an idle afternoon. I went to pick one of my children from school, a 20 minute round trip. While I was gone, a guy broke into the house and was proceeding to steal whatever he could. Long story short, The CHP and Tuolumne County deputies responded quickly. The CHP officer stayed until the whole scene was secure and while I was working with the TUOCo deputies. They all cared very deeply and we appreciate them tremendously.

@squirter - My experience with the Sonora PD is completely opposite of yours. I recently had a "dog" incident and the PD responded IMMEDIATELY. They were professional, courteous and caring. The situation was taken care w/o anyone, including the dogs, being injured. And their follow-up on the conclusion of this matter was great. Maybe it how you deal with them that invokes the responses you appear to get.

I also think those burned out buildings have been allowed to remain too long. That needs to be a city priority.

These are good ideas, but you need to enter them on the Vision Sonora web site for the City Counsel to hear you!

calaveras county doesn't have the grant so no point in wishing for it....
thrinnskaar   12/28/2012 10:08:43
2 lanes each direction on all bypasses. You know, so they would actually improve traffic flow.
Coiler   12/28/2012 16:39:42
Sounds like another overpaid committee that, in the end, wont do anything but postulate, and get paid. But, if they want input, Here's my two cents: definitely a north south bypass to ease congestion on Washington St, bus routes that actually go somewhere in the county... and regularly (when people need them), yes... more bike infrastructure (it's scary watching people try to bike on these roads around here) and of course, ending the monopoly of refuse services (aren't there laws that are supposed to keep WM from running the whole town) where's my choices?
my2cents   12/30/2012 13:40:48
Really, you want to know what I think? OK, if I was to come visit Sonora for the first time, I would instantly notice two key issues that would leave me with a negative impression of the place we call home.

Repair the burned and damage structures to existing buildings, and continue to spruce up downtown.

Rid the town of jailbirds, druggies, and people that look like they might rob the nice, naive visitors who think they're in Mayberry, CA.

Fix the waste and overpayment for any officials who are making exponentially more than their coworkers. All monies do not flow down hill, nor does the way that it's appropriated.

Turn Washington street into a one way two lane road. Same with Stewart street. Congestion solved.
