Oh look Toulumne county has one of the best gold mines in world, SITTING IDLE. County paying thousands of dollars for environmental nothing every year, guess we could not use 100 well paying jobs about now.

I remember the early 80's when SMC wanted to mine in Jamestown. Supervisor meetings had 100 anti-mine residents against 25 would be employees. SMC displayed models of a beautiful green park and blue lake they would build when they were done. A 30 year project? Not quite. SMC got everything they wanted and the county got the shaft. Bev Shane and Larry Beil protected the mine from complaints and violations of the use permit concerning noise, dust and water tables. 300 noise violations a year with no enforcement. Warnings to the mine before emergency inspections. Corruption and money talks and everyone else can go to He** !

The only reason the land has not been restored is because the county in its efforts to get more money from the mine broke the terms of the contract early letting the mine company off the hook for restoration. This gross neglect from the county and it's council is why the mine land was not restored. If the county had not been greedy and allowed the mine company to finish out it's contract as planned the land would have been restored and both would have been happy. Greed will kill you in the end.

mountainman, I agree, I have no beef with mining, " if done properly". As far as NIMBY's go you may have been on the front line of decent had it been your neighborhood. Mushroom clouds of asbestos laced dust blowing across neighborhoods with children playing, heavy equipment all night long, jake brakes early in the mornings and water wells losing volume.
How about those miners promised a 30 year job who bought homes and the the mine folds. What about the kids losing the Ag campus ?
The county planning department heads and the then Jamestown supervisor who seemed to work for the mine and NOT THE PEOPLE. It wasn't gross negligence it was gross corruption.

The citizens group Confine the Mine predicted everything that DID happen. But the greater community wanted those two dollar bills.....
