Illegal aliens kill 12 Americans per day.
Start there.

Knives, sporting goods, and cigarettes kill more then guns each day.
Start there.

Guns are used each day to protect Americans.
Start by requiring the liberal media to report on how many lives are saved each day with guns.

Why the liberal media blackout on how the gunman at the Oregon mall was stopped?

Won't work - the bad guys will still have guns...Drugs are illegal and look what that has done, nothing. Not willing to give up my guns PERIOD
VoiceOfReason   12/17/2012 08:01:22
Ok there HAS to be some common ground on this issue. How about this:

$5 a bullet tax on bullets purchased and removed from a gun range for any gun that can discharge more than (some reasonable number) bullets without reloading. All proceeds to be used for metal illness treatment and gun violence prevention efforts.

Should at least make it a lot harder to stockpile ammo or just have it lying around for your crazy child to pick up and use.

It seems odd to me that before there was even a briefing of the tragedy, on here, on Friday or Saturday, there was an article of President Obama's speech, instead. First thing this morning, the article is this.
redline   12/17/2012 08:19:34
Why don't the stupid politician outlaw some of the psychotropic drugs all the shooter have been on, oh maybe because their on the dole with big pharma??? LET OUTLAW OUR CARS THEY KILL PEOPLE EVERY DAY!!
remington   12/17/2012 08:21:36
here we go, disarm the country and use this tragedy as way to try and pass more laws that have nothing to do with saving lives. guns have been around a lot longer than these types of situations.

Remember the Democratic super-majority we just elected in California?

This is going through in California: no ifs, ands, or buts about it. We've made our beds, now lie in them. Give up your guns, or become a criminal, simple as that. Don't expect the Supreme Court to rescue you like in Illinois, either.
calisdad   12/17/2012 08:47:31
Odd that she would be so against something that launched her political career. Knee jerk reactions never solve anything. This one won't either.
WstPtWoodsman   12/17/2012 08:47:38
There's no easy answer to ending the tragedies like the ones we’ve seen recently. Take away all the guns? That will never fly. Banning assault rifle sales nation-wide might help to prevent FUTURE atrocities. Identifying mentally distressed individuals BEFORE they create carnage seems like the only real start to a solution. Keep the families of Sandy Hook in your prayers.

HONEST PEOPLE (GUN OWNERS OR NOT) SHOULD NOT HAVE AN ISSUE WITH GUN CONTROL
THLady   12/17/2012 08:52:48
Not sure why all 'liberals' think one way and 'conservatives' think another. I'm somewhere in the middle, slightly left. I have a CCW permit and would not hesitate to use it to protect someone in danger. I am very clear that its the people, not the guns. If someone wants to obtain a weapon for illegal use, they will get one no matter what the laws are.
miwukman   12/17/2012 08:56:11
We should also outlaw fertilizer, diesel and rental box trucks because just as many children were killed in the Oklahoma City bombing plus hundreds more of just as innocent people.
mountainjoe   12/17/2012 08:59:56
I like VoiceOfReason’s idea. You have my vote.
The4Horsemen   12/17/2012 09:00:02
I guess if was your child gunned down last Friday in Connecticut you would still support the ownership of semi-assault weapons? How sad. How very, very sad. God Bless America and all His Children!
Norseman   12/17/2012 09:00:49
If we outlawed ownership of automobiles; The crime of DUI would immediately disappear as well. And spoons and forks contribute to obesity. They need to go too. Or we could just demand that people enjoy their rights and act responsibly, or be held individually accountable.
wethehonestppl   12/17/2012 09:01:26
Nothing does more harm more quickly, created specifically to do so.
No 'vehicle' or other reduction to absurd argument should be taken seriously anymore.
Let's take our heads out of the sand.
The4Horsemen   12/17/2012 09:10:29
Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God! Matthew 5:9!

Heres a novel idea. Make all the teachers take a gun safety course and require them to spend a certain number of hrs at the shooting range each year so they are prepared to use the firearms in a situation such as this. We turn our children over to teachers every day. Is it too much to ask of them to be able to defend them in an emergency? I don't think so and I also believe that shooters would think twice about going into a school if they knew the teachers/staff were armed. You are never going to take the guns out of the hands of crazies that want to use them against us but you can prepare yourself for those situations !!! As far as assault weapons go. The 2nd ammendment was written so we could defend ourselves against a corrupt government. Now they want to take away that weapon :-)
Bert   12/17/2012 09:14:47
Honest people should not mind that they have their ability to defend themselves taken away, while dishonest people continue their evil? Sounds reasonable to me.....to those being dishonest with themselves.
wethehonestppl   12/17/2012 09:18:14
Really? This is the reaction to this horrible event?
Defensiveness and more silly nicknames and acting like toddlers?

I love the Constitution too, and I love my country. We have learned from history and part of what is wonderful is that we can worship and be who we are and pursue happiness, so long as it never infringes on others' basic rights. Our heroes fight for our freedom and safety, right?

What is happening, is NOW IMPENDING ON PEOPLE'S BASIC RIGHTS.

It's time we talk about these very destructive weapons, and what is REALLY necessary for ordinary citizens, not in law enforcement or the military, to possess. IT IS ABOUT MUCH MORE now, thank sport or security.
rrhs   12/17/2012 09:23:20
It is clear the person who commited this tragedy , was mentaly disturded ! was it not the liberals that all but shut down asylums and made it tougher to commit some one . so are the liberals to blame ? Oh NO were all entitled . It is all the fault of guns not that there are people who are sick angry or what ever , but they got the right . LIberals strike down laws to put gun offenders (i.e go use a gun go to jail ) in prison just for comitting a crime with a gun I saw a show On gangs in oakland they openly displade the guns why did the cops not arest all of them ? It is so sad the loss of any one to murder no matter the means .
IT IS NOT LEADERSHIP TO GRANDSTAND ON THE BACK OF TRAGEDY

THIS TRAGEDY IS NOT A POLITICAL OPERTUNITY IS IT ?
grey   12/17/2012 09:24:45
Hitler, Pol Pot, Idi Amin, Saddam Hussein and numerous others said the same thing. Keep in mind that Thomas Jefferson stated the purpose of gun ownership was to keep the Federal Government from becoming a Government of Tyranny. (are we too late?)

The current Regime Master is pushing the same buttons, to allow the Feds to do as they please, without respect to what the Constitution, or the people think about it.
For those above who want "reasonable regulatory restrictions", I suggest re-reading the 2nd Amendment. It is a completely unambiguous statement which is made.
drvmustangs   12/17/2012 09:28:58
My question at the moment is. Why new Legislation on Assault weapons ? My understanding he used two hand guns. What does a rifle have to do with this? Other than he had one in the vehicle. This is a Government play to control the People. You know us stupid people that have elected these Perfect individuals into office that are not corrupted or anything. Question the intentions of the people in charge.
