Sonora School Gunfire Update

"There is a shooting range just outside the city limits and it's near the area of the school...."

Is it just me, or does this seem like a bad idea?

At the least, the next time they schedule firearms training there they should give the SPD and the school a heads up.

Devo you must have missed the last few lines, so here they are.( Stinson says the range does call the department when they will be shooting and did advise them of the training today.)

@Devo

Bald Mtn is quite a ways from both Cassina and Sonora El. There is also a shooting range in Jamestown. Gun ranges are safe, controlled environments, where shooters aim at targets that have sufficient berms/walls behind them.

There are no crazy action-film style scenarios with bullets flying every which way.

Also, if you read the article all the way through, law enforcement WAS advised prior to the training taking place.

No news about the gunfire last night in Avery at the Safari trailer park adjoining Avery Middle School?

DEEV- read the article, they did call in ahead like they always do, someone at the PD just blew it.....and no history of any accidents. Gun hysteria by the ignorant caused a big ado over nothing.

my buddies truck backfires and sounds just like gun shots..he also drives through there around that time..wonder if it was him..lol

It's happened before? Maybe it's time to move the range a little further away from town.
spritzer   12/07/2012 08:00:00
I agree!

There was a "heads up" the police dept was notified and aware of this shoot. Seems like someone should have checked before they did the lock down. I saw on TV that a teacher said she saw someone in camo and carring a rifle? I would like to know more about that, like what teacher or was this just made up by the media, or the teacher? This has happened before. Hello?
sabrina   12/07/2012 08:39:58
Most likely the noise was heard and the person was noticed but the two were not related and the person in camo didn't have anything to do with it (no gun)

When it comes to childrens safety, nothing else should matter. If the police had ignored the shooting because the rifle range was in use at the time and a gunman was near the school, think what damage that may have caused. The police acted appropriately in this matter and I would have them handle it in no other way. In regards to the shooting range, if it is on BLM property, its use is a Federal matter and completely out of our locals hands.

How long has that shooting range been there. If it predates the school, shouldn't the school be the one to move?

Maybe the school should call the range before they start a man-hunt. In fact, I think they should do a field trip to the range so the kids can become familiar with the safe handling and operating of firearms.
AngryBird   12/07/2012 11:33:43
Whether they found the shooter or not, or if it was someone at the range, I'm VERY glad that the PD, Sheriff and CHP responded to the call. In other towns and cities you wouldn't see that.
leaperman621   12/07/2012 11:52:09
Bert,

I agree with you. Didn't know there was a range in the area. What a WASTE of tax money. Wouldn't THE SCHOOL know of the nearby range?....OH..teachers...common sense....hmmm
doesn't mix.
Carnivore   12/07/2012 13:20:19
You took the words right out of my mouth Bert.

I don’t think that Sonora PD blew it. I appreciate all that they do. Each incident is different. What would had happen if the school did not go under lock down and there was a gunman. We are talking about the safety of our children. Excellent job to all.

The letter sent home to students said a staff member saw a man creeping around the outer area of the school (along the fenceline) in camoflauge and heard gunfire. I say bravo to all the decisions made by school to lock down the school. You can never be sure. This shows School officials truely care about our kids. Definitely wasnt a waste of my tax $.
