Send the deputy to FrontSight for a four day handgun class.
If the deputy didnt hit the suspect, he hit something else. And as there were witnesses in the area, the deputy is * lucky that the 'something else' was not an innocent bystander.

Sabrina - Title should say "Deputy Fires Gun". "Gunshot" is a description of the sound.
Sounds like the "witness" would make a better sheriff than the one with the badge! Can they pay the witness for doing the Sheriff's job?
What kind of trained professional fires a gun from inside an enclosed space? Of course he has ear damage!

Guys we should discontinue the accuracy comments until more facts are known. We don't know how far the subject was from the patrol vehicle and if the deputy had to fire through the windshield which would cause the bullets to drop substantially and be far less accurate.

We can stand back and criticize a deputy's actions, but we weren't there. Kahuna hits the mark regarding more firearms training. When an LEO draws his weapon he should be prepared to drop his subject. More range training should be mandated by the department.

If firing through a windshield is your best shot you don't have a shot.

I'm amazed by the people who post without reading the story. Sonora PD? Through the windshield?

So you would let a subject draw a shotgun, Point it at you, and if you were in the patrol car you would get out, draw your handgun (a far less powerful weapon). All while being unprotected? I know each and every person commenting would have triple tapped the subject. Two in the chest one in the head, right? Every situation is different and not enough is known about this incident to make negative comments forward the officer.

I think the sheriff's dept should all carry mossberg pump actions. Even up for the meth heads.
Training is always a good thing...never such a thing as TOO MUCH gun training.

Gotta agree but the do they ever read the article. What was Sonora pd doing in valley springs?
I agree most of them need more range time but unless the rest have actually fired at a person in a moment of butt puckering excitement then they need to shut up.
Lets wait and see what the final story is. I am not a cop or always an automatic supporter of them but shall we wait and see what the final analysis is ?

Triple tap also called a failure drill.....failure of the person to go down....I sure would have dropped him but the'thru the windshield' concept is hilarious.....shows lack of knowledge and experience and common sense.

LOL....i think all the negative comments were directed toward the knuckle headed idea of shooting thru the windshield which wasn't mentioned in the article.

goose...I of course thought the 'thru the windshield' part was made up since it is so absurd but the follow up article confirms, Deputy Fife fired twice thru the windshield at the suspect. OMG!

You guys criticizing his aim are pretty lame. Its a little different shooting at someone when they surprized you with a shotgun pointed at you. Of course you would have hit him one handed, hanging out the window, and would of had ESP to know that he was gonna come out the door with a shotgun to greet you as you were pulling up. Also that deputy's tactical skills with his firearm is much better then yours. We give officers weapons and the power to protect us, but it seems that everytime they use that power people cry and complain. Im glad he missed or his life would of changed because he killed someone. The situation was diffused and turned out ok. We all cant be Jason Bourne or Dirty Harry like you guys. Cut the guy some slack. Jeez.

Airborn....I worked with a guy who returned fire from the drivers seat thru his passengers window...which was rolled up. Dang right we razzed the hell out of him....it is just the nature of the beast. You must know having someone trying to kill you is a traumatic experience but you gotta use some sense.
