Is The Mill Opening Soon?
Sonora, CA -- Is the reopening of the Standard Sierra Pacific Industries mill on the near horizon?
According to Public Information Officer Mark Luster, "We would like that to be the case but unfortunately it isn't at this point.
There are two factors holding up the reopening of the mill; a lack of housing starts due to the down economy and a shortage of timber from the Stanislaus National Forest due to regulations and pending litigation on the part of environmentalists.
We do have a few S.P.I. employees on site making sure the mill is in operating condition so we'll be ready to go once the economy turns around and we have sufficient timber to process."
Luster did add that the S.P.I. Chinese Camp mill is operating with approximately 120 employees.
