San Francisco, CA -- The City of San Francisco will pay the federal government $7 million to settle claims for a pair of fires started in the Stanislaus National Forest.

This is according to a report in the Sacramento Bee. The 1999 Pilot Fire and the 2004 Early Fire burned nearly 5,700 acres in Tuolumne County and were caused by trees growing too close to transmission lines operated by Hetch Hetchy Water and Power.

State law requires the agency to maintain a 10 ft. clearance between power lines and vegetation. Some of the funds will reportedly be used for restoration efforts.
