Weekend CHP Checkpoint

Sponsored by:

Jamestown, CA — There was a DUI check point this weekend on Highway 49 at Fifth Avenue in Jamestown. The checkpoint was set up at 6:00p.m. and was in place until 1:15a.m. on Saturday.

CHP Sgt. David Chesson says “We had a total of 834 cars that went through and of that 752 were screened, meaning we actually contacted them and checked them for general sobriety. Only four citations issued and there were zero arrests.”

According to the CHP “The deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints is a proven resource in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug involved crashes. Research shows that crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough.” DUI accounts for nearly one third of traffic fatalities.

Funding for this checkpoint is provided to the CHP by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
