Several Questioned In Connection To Murder

Sponsored by:

Valley Springs, CA — The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office reports that some sex offenders and parolees around Valley Springs have been questioned following the murder of 8-year-old Leila Fowler.

Captain Jim Macedo stated that some have been photographed and interviewed as part of the investigation. He said the people questioned, “have not been ruled out.” Officials pointed out that they are not calling it a sex crime, but stated they are simply doing their due diligence. The Sheriff’s Office held a press conference yesterday with Leila Fowler’s parents, who were identified as Barney Fowler and Krystal Walters. The couple was introduced, but declined to speak.

Sheriff’s Officials did confirm that a neighbor also witnessed someone running from the home Saturday, which matched the earlier description given by Leila Fowler’s 12-year-old brother. He has been described as a white or Hispanic male, with longer gray hair, six foot tall, muscular build, and was last seen wearing a black long sleeved shirt and blue pants.

“We are doing everything possible to apprehend the person responsible for the murder of this 8-year-old girl,” added Sheriff Gary Kuntz.

The Sheriff’s Office stated that Leila Fowler died from multiple stab wounds. Residents are still encouraged to call in tips to 1-209-754-6030.

A candle light vigil for Fowler will begin at seven o’clock tonight at the Jenny Lind Elementary Soccer Field. A shuttle from the Good Samaritan Church in Valley Springs will start running at 6pm. Organizers are encouraging attendants to bring a candle and purple ribbon.

A Memorial Fund has been set up for Leila Fowler at F&M Bank of Central California. Donations can be sent to F&M Bank, 18836 E. Main Street, Linden, CA 95236.
