Roads Open For Motor Vehicle Use

Sonora, CA — The Forest Service announced today the Stanislaus National Forest will open most of the roads that were closed for the winter season.

Acting Forest Supervisor Tina Welch states, “Because of the recent snow fall and continued intermittent spring storms, some roads at the higher elevation in Summit Ranger District will remain closed until they are safe for public travel.” Welch added, “It is anticipated these roads should be opened in the next couple of weeks.”

Welch encourages visitors to contact the district office they are wishing to visit prior to travel to assure the roads are physically open. She also said overall, “This has been an exceptionally dry year again with little snow on the ground.”

The Forest Service advises caution whenever traveling on back roads as they have not been maintained and are not plowed. They recommend taking appropriate cautions and to come prepared for frequent snow drifts.

Motor Vehicle Use Maps are available at all Forest and Ranger District offices as well as online at the Forest’s website www.fs.usda.gov/stanislaus. Motor vehicles are allowed only on designated routes and cross country travel is prohibited. Sue Warren, travel management project leader says, “Folks coming to the forest to recreate will know where wheeled motorized travel is allowed, what vehicles are allowed on which roads and trails, and where people can drive wheeled vehicles over the snow.”
