Sponsored by:

Copperopolis, CA — 77-year-old John Mathews of Columbia was arrest last month in Tuolumne County, this time he was busted by a Calaveras County Sheriff’s Deputy riding a motorized shopping cart for a second time. Calaveras County Sheriff’s Officials say this time shoppers reported an intoxicated man driving a motorized shopping cart in the parking lot of a store on Spangler Lane in Copperopolis.

Sgt. Chris Hewitt says, “The deputy ran his records check and found Mathews had a warrant for his arrest out of Tuolumne County for failure to appear on a DUI charge. The deputy arrested him and booked him into the Calaveras County Jail. There was no theft of any type of cart or riding device.” Mathews was still in the Copperopolis store parking lot riding the cart.

Mathews was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in Tuolumne County Superior Court on felony auto theft charges, but missed that hearing because he was behind bars in Calaveras County. He had been released on his own recognizance since March 1st. The Judge issued a warrant for his arrest and set his bail at $20,000.
