Thieves Third Strike

Sponsored by:

Valley Springs, CA –Thieves target Valley Springs Elementary School for a third time. Calaveras County Sheriff’s Officials say early Thursday morning the school was broken into and seven classrooms were hit. The burglars got away with a six laptops and several flat screen TVs. Similar items were taken in the previous break-ins earlier in January.

Sgt. Chris Hewitt says, “Based on the method that was used to get into the classrooms and the items that were stolen; it appears it is the same person or group of people that are doing this crime.”  Hewitt estimates the total cost of stolen property from the three burglaries is around $18,000.

Calaveras Unified School District Superintendent Mark Campbell says, “Luckily, insurance will cover most of it. We’ll have to pay a deductible. For the first two break-ins, the replacement order has already been placed. We’re looking at getting those computers in sometime early next week, so the gap in time has been shrunk significantly thanks to staff working together.”

Campbell says the computers that were stolen were the ones that teachers use and students did not lose class work. Also, he says they plan on putting up surveillance cameras soon.
