Congressional Representatives Mixed On Fiscal Cliff

Sponsored by:

Washington, DC, — The vote on the so-called fiscal cliff legislation saw the Mother Lode’s two current House members in favor, and the soon-to-be representative in opposition.

The new Congress will be sworn into office on January 3rd. Last night Republican Congressmen Jeff Denham and Dan Lungren voted in favor of the Senate package. Meanwhile, Republican Congressman Tom McClintock, whose district will add Tuolumne and Calaveras Counties, voted in opposition. McClintock has been an opponent of eliminating any of the Bush era tax cuts that were approved back in 2003. The package approved yesterday made the tax cuts permanent only on income earners below $400K. The legislation also extended unemployment benefits.

There was talk of amending the Senate bill to include spending cuts, but that was scrapped, and it was a simple up or down vote. An additional vote on spending cuts is expected within the coming months.
