Sonora, CA -- The former Sullivan Creek Elementary School has been deemed a "Blue Ribbon School" by the U.S. Department of Education.

For financial reasons the school merged with Curtis Creek Elementary late last year.

District Superintendent Margie Bulkin says, "We're very happy at the Curtis Creek School District to accept the Blue Ribbon Award on behalf of all the Sullivan Creek family, students and staff who earned it."

Former Sullivan Creek Principal Liz Burr will travel to Washington, DC in November to attend a ceremony to receive the award from U.S. Education Secretary Arnie Duncan. Burr is currently a co-administrator at Curtis Creek.

Sullivan Creek received the honor after scoring in the top 10 percent on the annual Academic Performance Index tests.
