Sacramento, CA -- $6 billion ... that´s the estimated price tag for the two new prisons and other correctional units that Governor Schwarzenegger would like to build to relieve extreme inmate overcrowding.

The governor´s special legislative session on prison reform gets underway next week when state lawmakers return from their summer break.

The statewide prison system currently houses 172,000 inmates.

Sierra Conservation Center Warden Ivan Clay says dormitory population within the state prison system has doubled in the past 24 years. At the Jamestown prison, what formerly was a full service gymnasium now houses 300 inmates and can no longer be used as a recreational facility.
