Stolen Truck Leads To A Citizens Arrest
Calaveras County Sheriff's Office
West Point, CA -- A stolen logging truck turned into a chase and ended with the suspect under citizen's arrest at gun point. Calaveras County Sheriff's deputies were recently called to the 3800 block of Lily Gap Road in West Point for a suspicious circumstance around nine at night. When deputies arrived on the scene they found 42-year-old Roger Gibbings of West Point being held at gun point. After questioning the parties, deputies learned Gibbings had allegedly stolen a large logging truck belonging to Sierra Pacific Industries and crashed it through two metal gates.
Some neighbors became alarmed when they heard a noise coming from the area of the logging truck. Realizing the truck was being stolen they jumped into a vehicle and chased it. When the logging truck got stuck on a hillside the neighbors confronted Gibbings at gun point and made a citizen's arrest.
Further investigation revealed that Gibbings had also stolen a pickup truck that he left behind when he took off in the logging truck. A passenger in the stolen logging truck, 22-year-old Cena Fillmore of West Point, jumped out of the truck and ran from the scene. Investigators say she was captured at a nearby home.
Both were arrested for felony burglary and vehicle theft along with other charges. Gibbings was also arrested on an active California Department of Corrections felony parole violation warrant.
The stolen logging truck was valued at $500,000.00. The damage done to the metal gates is estimated to be $2,000. Also, a search of the stolen pickup truck revealed several items recently taken from residential burglaries in the area.
