Calaveras Supervisors Face Difficult Budget Talks

Sponsored by:

San Andreas, CA — The Calaveras County Supervisors will host a series of budget hearings over the next week looking at next fiscal year’s budget.

The current budget, which ends June 30th, included funding for nearly 510 full-time equivalent positions. Due to multiple years of shortfalls and declining reserves, the recommended budget for next year includes money for only 483 FTE positions, a decline of 27. The overall budget spending proposed is $109 million, and the General Fund spending is $37.4 million

“I believe it’s going to be a very challenging week as we look at trying to balance the budget, staying within our means, and still deliver the services the community expects and deserves,” says Board Chair Debbie Ponte. “We have our work cut out for us.”

The first budget hearing will be Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 as part of the regular Supervisors meeting. Budget hearings will also be held Wednesday at 9am, Thursday at 1:30pm, Friday at 9am, next Monday at 9am, and next Tuesday at 9am. The hearings are open to the public, and will be located in the Supervisors meeting room.

County department heads will have a chance to speak about the budget and note the cuts they have made. Department heads also sometimes use the opportunity to state their case as to why additional funding should come to their service area.
