Voter Turnout Very Low

Sonora, CA — Tuolumne County will be “lucky to hit 41%” in voter turnout for the primary election according to Auditor-Controller Debi Bautista.

“Less than 50% of the citizens of Tuolumne County made a choice of who their leaders are,” says Bautista.  “Sonora is a perfect example that your vote really does count, so if you want to have your voice heard the ballot is one of the ways to do it.”

Calaveras County election officials report that turnout was around the 40% mark as well. There are 190 provisional ballots left to count in Tuolumne County and 233 in Calaveras. The final count for both counties should be certified by the end of next week. However, ballots cast in both counties are well above the statewide average. With nearly 1 million ballots left to process in the state, turnout could be around 25 percent. State election officials say that would be a record low for a primary election in California but better than some forecasts. So far, statewide nearly 3.4 million ballots have been counted.
