Ballot Initiative To Eliminate AB 109?
Sacramento, CA -- California voters might be asked whether to roll back the state's AB 109 prisoner realignment program.
The program was implemented by Governor Jerry Brown as a response to a federal court order mandating that California reduce the state's overcrowded prisons. It has resulted in several lower level offenders being held in county jails, and monitored by local probation departments.
The proposed ballot measure was announced yesterday by former Lt. Governor Abel Maldonado, who recently made his intentions known that he is considering a run for the Republican Gubernatorial nomination in 2014. Maldonado indicated that he is hoping that the funding currently sent to local counties for AB 109 would instead go towards additional prison space.
