Railtown A Landmark

Jamestown, CA — Tuolumne County throws its support behind a proposal to make Railtown 1897 in Jamestown a State Historical Landmark.

At today’s meeting, Tuolumne County Supervisors voted unanimously to send a letter to the State Historic Resource Commission in support of the designation.

Regarding landmark designation, District 5 Supervisor Karl Rodefer says, “I think one other thing it does is it affords, although be it maybe a thin layer, but another layer of protection for Railtown going forward in the future should state parks funding become an issue again which it most likely will again at some point.  It is important and it is a recognition that I think personally is long overdue.”

The State Office of Historical Preservation nominated Railtown to be listed as a landmark as part of the 150th anniversary of California State Parks. The Resource Commission will have the final say on the designation at its April 22 meeting.
