Sonora High Stadium Stalled

Sonora, CA — Approval from the State is holding up construction on the Sonora High School Stadium and has forced some football season changes.  Superintendent Mike McCoy says. “It’s a waiting game.”

The stadium plans were submitted to the Division of the State Architect (DSA) in December for review and approval. McCoy says they had hoped to hear back from the department by now so construction could have already begun. He says it will impact the fall football season.

“I’ve already asked our Athletic Director to make plans for the fall for the first few contests to make sure they are away games,” says McCoy.

McCoy says Bret Harte and Calaveras High School Stadiums are also an option. Whether the whole season will have to be played on the road has not been ruled out. However, McCoy adds, “My best wishes would be that we have a homecoming game towards the end of the season and we dedicate the new stadium at that time.”

As reported earlier, Summerville High School also submitted its construction plans to the DSA in December and is waiting for approval. McCoy says they cannot start on any other part of the bond project because all parts have to be approved by the DSA at the same time. He does vow, “We are going to build a stadium in 2014.”
