Lawmakers Approve Drought Relief Legislation

Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA — California lawmakers have quickly approved Governor Jerry Brown’s $687 million drought relief package.

The legislation is now headed to the Governor’s desk for his signature. Much of the money will go towards “shovel ready” conservation and water recycling projects across the state. It is designed to help drought stricken communities get through the current emergency. The money also includes food and housing aid for low-income residents impacted by the drought, notably in agricultural regions.

Local District 14 Senator Tom Berryhill and District Five Assemblyman Frank Bigelow both voted in favor of the package. However, during the debates on the legislative floor they voiced concerns about nothing moving forward at this time related to additional above ground water storage.

Over $500 million of the Governor’s water legislation will come from unspent state bond money.
