Sonora, CA — The CHP wants to remind you that fans don’t let fans drive drunk. They encourage everyone to select a sober designated driver to be the “Most Valuable Player” for game day.

“We want everyone to enjoy the game this year, but most importantly, we want everyone to get home safely,” says CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow.

Preliminary figures from Super Bowl Sunday in 2012 showed there were 221 alcohol-involved collisions statewide, which resulted in 5 deaths and nearly 114 injuries. In addition, 390 drivers were arrested statewide for DUI during last year’s game.

Transportation officials also encourage you to save the telephone numbers for your local taxi services on your cell phone ahead of time.

Office of Traffic Safety Acting Director Russia Chavis says, “A taxi cab may cost you $30, but that’s nothing compared to the $10,000 or more in fees, fines, and the stigma that can stem from getting a DUI.”

The CHP reminds motorist to report suspected drunk drivers. They suggest you get a description, license plate number, location, and travel direction of the vehicle.

One great game day event in Sonora you will not want to miss is the 27th annual Frank Salel Super Bowl Breakfast. It starts at 7 a.m. and runs through 11:30 a.m. on Sunday at the John Muir Building at the Mother Lode Fairgrounds. Proceeds from the event put on by the Sonora 49er Rotary Club will help fund scholarships for graduating Sonora High seniors.
