Columbia, CA — The Columbia Airport will be closed until six o’clock this evening while the NTSB and FAA investigate this morning’s plane crash.

A plane had problems while landing at around 6am. Sgt. James Oliver of the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office says both of the occupants were able to get out safely. The plane was on fire when the first responders arrived on scene, and Cal Fire was able to quickly extinguish it. The names of the two people that were in the plane have not been released.

“I know that it was some type of a medical transport plane,” adds Sgt. Oliver. “They were en-route to pick-up a nurse, and then transport that nurse to another location. But, I’m not sure where the plane was coming from, or where they were going to be headed with the nurse.”

The cause of the accident will be investigated throughout the day. The airport will be closed until six o’clock this evening because of the investigation.
