Demolishing A Downtown Eyesore
Sonora, CA - A burnt-out home on Stewart Street in Sonora will come down. City officials are working on issuing a permit to demolish the Victorian Style home on the 400 block of Stewart Street between Restano and William Street. Flames shot out of the home, which included 15 apartments, on January 17, 2012. Plumbing repairs using a torch were being done when the blaze broke out.
City Administrator Tim Miller says staff is doing a Cultural Resources Assessment to make sure the home cannot be restored or preserved and make sure there are no hazards like asbestos in the home before it can be torn down. Once the permit is issued the home owner will have 180 days to start the demolition.
