Sonora, CA -- Tuolumne Utilities District (TUD) customers along the Phoenix Lake watershed will be getting an informational brochure this week on ways they can help protect Phoenix Lake. The pamphlet is one part of The Phoenix Lake Preservation and Restoration Plan as the lake is the primary source of drinking water for Sonora, Jamestown,
Scenic View, Mono Village and East Sonora.
The brochure focuses on steps customers can take to help protect the Phoenix Lake watershed. "We are eagerly pursuing funding sources to move forward with the Phoenix Lake Preservation and Restoration Plan. But until then, there are ways homes within this watershed can reduce sediment into the lake. Some ways to protect this watershed are reducing runoff, maintaining septic tanks and controlling erosion," states Ted Allen, Associate Engineer in charge of this project.
The lake was constructed in 1852 to support hydraulic mining. Today the 88-acre lake is one of several reservoirs in the TUD distribution system. TUD say one third of Phoenix Lake's water storage capacity has been lost over the past 100 years.
