The CHP reports Tuolumne County and Calaveras County DUI arrests were down for 2012 and the New Year's holiday weekend.

CHP Officer Nick Norton was Thursday's KVML "Newsmaker of the Day".

This past New Year's Weekend Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP) from December 28, 2012 to January 1, 2013 stacks up like this:

Tuolumne County had 12 traffic collisions and 3 DUI arrests. One of those arrests came from a traffic collision. There was also one fatality, but the CHP says they are still investigating whether alcohol was a factor in that crash on Shawmut Road near Chinese Camp this past weekend.

In Calaveras County, four people were arrested, two for DUI. There were four accidents, none were DUI related. The CHP says for a second year in a row there were no fatalities for the county.

Here are the statistics for 2012:

Tuolumne County had 776 traffic collisions of those 101 involved DUI. In 2011 there were 725 crashes and 81 involved DUI. There were a total of 365 DUI arrests and seven fatalities in 2012. There were a total 426 DUI arrests and eight fatalities in 2011.

Calaveras County handled 509 collisions in 2012 compared to 560 in 2011. There were nine fatal accidents with 10 fatalities compared to 2011 where nine people died. Four of the fatal accidents in 2012 were DUI related. There were a total of 57 DUI related accidents compared to 64 in 2011. Also, the total number of DUI arrests was down from 243 in 2011 to 199 this year.

The San Andreas CHP Officers wrote 39 citations over the New Year's holiday. Most were for speeding including several mechanical violations. Five were issued for these reasons; not wear seatbelt, failing to stop at a stop sign, passing over solid double yellow line, an open container of alcohol, and possession of marijuana.

The "Newsmaker of the Day" is heard every weekday morning on AM 1450 KVML at 6:47, 7:47 and 8:47am.
