New Gun Regulations?
The tragedy in Connecticut is spurring a new debate about state and national gun laws.
U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein announced over the weekend that she will introduce legislation in the next Congress to ban assault weapons. She states, "As I have said many times before, and now repeat in the wake of yet another tragedy, weapons of war don't belong on our streets or in our theaters, shopping malls and, most of all, our schools." A similar bill is expected to be introduced in the House of Representatives.
California Democratic State Senator Leeland Yee said he is considering re-introducing a bill to close a loophole regarding the sale of assault weapons at the state level. Yee pushed legislation earlier this year, but it failed to get out of committee. Senate Democratic leader Darrell Steinberg also added over the weekend that lawmakers will reflect on how these types of tragedies can be prevented.
