Sacramento, CA - The Associated Press reports California's unemployment rate declined in September to 10.2 percent. That is down from 10.6 percent the previous month. Tuolumne County saw a drop in the numbers as well, with a decrease from 11.3 percent to 10.6 percent. Calaveras County's rate also dropped from 12.6 percent to 11.9 percent.

The state Employment Development Department says half a dozen sectors grew in September, including education, finance and hospitality. They say California added 8,500 nonfarm payroll jobs last month, showing the state's economy was continuing its gradual improvement.

The U.S. unemployment rate also decreased in September to 7.8 percent.
