Supervisors Send Rim Fire Letter

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — The Tuolumne County Supervisors are weighing in on the U.S. Forest Service’s Rim Fire Recovery project.

The Forest Service is preparing a Draft Environmental Impact Statement regarding the salvage of dead trees, removal of hazard trees, road reconstruction, and other matters.

The letter states that Tuolumne County supports the goal of creating a fire resilient forest, and believes that salvage logging is the “critical first step.” It adds, “This County has a vast and complete logging infrastructure that will greatly benefit from the salvage efforts. The removal of dead trees may require combining local and outside sources, and use of various methods, ranging from ground based mechanized equipment to helicopters or cable systems.”

The letter also states that the county is pleased that the Forest Service is taking steps to protect sensitive habitat areas, taking erosion prevention measures, and protecting cultural resources.

The letter was sent with a 5-0 vote.
