City Of Sonora
City Of Sonora

The Sonora City Council will discuss a variety of issues this evening. One is to waive the second reading of an ordinance change allowing more buildings over 35 ft. tall in the city.

The Council already passed the first reading of the measure at a meeting earlier this month. Currently the city allows buildings taller than 35 ft. in various areas of the city, with a Conditional Use Permit. This includes the downtown historic district on S. Washington Street, the Downtown Plaza, and the Sonora Plaza Shopping Center (by Orchard Supply). Those areas are either designated as "Commercial", "Tourist and Administrative Zone", or "Multi-family Residential."

However, a building of this height is not allowed in parcels designated as simply "General Commercial." Those areas include the Timberhills Shopping Center, Crossroads, and the former Andy's site which is now owned by SRMC.

In addition, the Council will vote to award a contract for a water proofing project at the Police Station. The contract proposal is for $131 thousand. Tonight's meeting begins at 5pm at Sonora City Hall. It is open to the public.

(It is noted that the 35 ft. ordinance was the topic of a recent myMotherLode.com poll, and there was opposition to the change. 519 people voted. 41 percent were in favor and 59 percent were opposed.)
