Tower Extension Cut Short

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — AT&T has pulled its application to extend a tower in downtown Sonora. The City Council had denied AT&T’s request in September to extend a dish receiver 12 additional feet on a William Street building. The council wanted the company to come up with other options to camouflage the tower. Instead, the company has pulled its application.

Community Development Director Rachelle Kellogg says, “Apparently within the next couple of years they are expanding fiber optics in the city so they will no longer need this receiver or tower. All this equipment is going to be going away.”

Originally, the Planning Commission had approved AT&T’s request to raise the tower, but the Tuolumne Heritage Committee appealed that decision to the council. The company’s fiber optic expansion will take place over the next several years.
