Tuolumne County, CA -- Our recent heat wave can be dangerous when it comes to compost piles. In Tuolumne County the hot temperatures caused a pile to spontaneously combust on Rocky Point Drive and Ferreti Road in Groveland on Thursday around 4pm. CAL Fire says luckily the pile was not near any structures or vegetation and crews put out the flames quickly.

CAL Fire says it is important to turn the pile frequently so gases don't build up especially when temperatures rise. Also they say to make sure you have a fire brake around the pile like bare mineral soil.
