Longtime News Reporter Passes Away

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — A well respected and loved newspaper reporter, who had spent 40 years covering Tuolumne County, has passed away at the age of 70.

Lenore Rutherford died of lung cancer in Coeur d’alene, Idaho on Saturday, and she was surrounded by family members at the time of her passing.

Rutherford’s daughter, Candi Perkins, says her mother covered the news in Tuolumne County for 40 years, writing for the Tuolumne Prospector and Union Democrat. She covered everything from high profile court cases to community events.

Rutherford was born in Susanville in 1943, and she and her husband William moved to Tuolumne County in 1965. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary prior to his passing in September of last year. She was a past Girl Scout leader, active in FFA, and in the 1970’s served on the Summerville High School Board of Trustees.

A service for Rutherford will be held on November 23rd at 11am at the Tuolumne Community Baptist Church. A potluck reception will follow immediately afterwards.
