Tainted Soil Clean Up

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — Crews are working hard to finish a soil clean-up at a downtown Sonora parking lot before the ghost and goblins hit the streets. The lot is located on South Washington and Church Streets across from Sonora Opera Hall. Gasoline tanks and contaminated soil are being removed from the property owned by Chevron. The city rents the land from the company and uses it as a parking lot. That has required the city to frequently test the ground water for contamination.

Sonora City Administrator Tim Miller says, “The work that’s being done there is to remediate the site rather than monitor the site over a long term. They removed the soil in a specific area within the parking lot. There will be some ongoing monitoring when their done, but it was to meet the Regional Water Quality Control Board standards so that the site could be removed from ongoing monitoring.”

Chevron is paying for the work which was slated to be complete the first week of October. Crews will back-fill where the soil and tanks were dug out then repave and stripe the lot in the next couple of weeks.
