Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors
Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors

Sonora, CA -- The Tuolumne County Supervisors had a discussion today about whether to do away with various planning commissions.

Up for debate was whether to keep or eliminate the Jamestown Area Planning Commission, Columbia Area Planning Commission, Southern Tuolumne County Planning Commission, Twain Harte Design Review/Planning Advisory Committee, Tuolumne Design Review/Planning Advisory Committee, Phoenix Lake Country Club Estates Design Review Committee and the Muller Subdivision Design Review Committee.

County documents show that the cost of staff time to keep these commissions going and run the meetings is around $90,000 a year.

Members of the public argued both against and in favor of keeping the commissions. Some stated that it is important for the residents to have easy access to meetings on decisions that impact their community, while others felt the various committees are redundant and slow development projects.

District Three Supervisor Evan Royce proposed that a study group be formed to find ways to streamline some of the activities of the committees. The Supervisors voted unanimously to keep all of the commissions intact at this time, but expressed an interest in moving forward with the creation of the study group. Royce said he would bring back his proposal at a future meeting after working out some of the details.
