Sacramento, CA -- District 25 Assemblywoman Kristin Olsen says she is "extremely disappointed" with yesterday's Supreme Court ruling that allows the state to eliminate redevelopment agencies.

Olsen says it is a "clear violation of the spirit of Proposition 22," which was approved by voters last year, and bars the state from borrowing money from cities and counties to balance the budget.

"Redevelopment agencies are one of California's only economic development tools," says Olsen. "It is shortsighted and foolish to eliminate these agencies that help create jobs and remove blight, especially during a recession."

"We should be cutting state bureaucracy and programs to close our budget deficit, not using local funds as a bailout," adds Olsen.

The elimination of redevelopment agencies is designed to save the state around $1.7 billion during the current budget year, and $400 million each year thereafter. Olsen, a Republican, represents both Tuolumne and Calaveras Counties.
