Decision Coming On Redevelopment Agencies
Sacramento, CA -- The California Supreme Court will determine the fate of state redevelopment agencies today.
The Associated Press reports that the court will release its decision about whether the state has the right to eliminate redevelopment agencies and divert billions of dollars to schools, law enforcement and other local services. Eliminating redevelopment agencies would bring the state an estimated $1.4 billion this budget year and $400,000 a year thereafter.
There are around 400 redevelopment agencies in the state, which are primarily controlled by cities and counties. They are designed to promote construction projects that revitalize blighted districts.
