CHP Citations Down Over The Holiday Weekend
San Andreas, CA -- Calaveras and Tuolumne County CHP officers released their Christmas Weekend Statistics for the maximum enforcement period. In Calaveras County from Friday at 6:00pm till midnight on Monday CHP officers arrested one person suspected of driving under the influence in Calaveras County. The officers handled six accidents, far more than the one accident last year, but there were no fatalities.
In Tuolumne County three were arrested for driving under the influence. There were two injury accidents, both on J-59, and no fatalities. This year the CHP issued 20 citations according to CHP Officer Mike Remmel, "This was far below last year's 60 citations."
Statewide CHP arrested 889 drivers on suspicion of driving under the influence, a 35% increase from last year's 658. Eight people died in California over the weekend in automobile accidents this year, compared with only four last year. Officer Remmel pointed out that last year's fatalities happened to be unusually low but thankfully people drove safely in this area.
