Rock Fall Near Ahwahnee Does Not Concern Yosemite Officials

Yosemite, CA -- There was an 800 ton rock fall in Yosemite National Park near the Ahwahnee Hotel late last week, but officials say it should not deter visitors from traveling in that area.

“Anytime there is a rock fall we always look at the triggering mechanism, and this was a classic situation where it was under a ledge and a natural process,” says Yosemite Spokesperson Scott Gediman. “Compared to the recent rock falls that we had at Curry Village, this one was actually very small.”

In October may of the visitor accommodations and campsites at Curry Village were shut down indefinitely following a pair of rockslides.

No one was injured in the most recent rock fall near the Ahwahnee, but it caused damage to a vehicle.
