Fighting Childhood Obesity
Sonora, CA-- Tuolumne County Schools and Sonora Regional Medical Center have teamed up for a common goal. "Fit for the Future" is a program dedicated to eliminating childhood obesity.
Targeting students in the 5th and 7th grades, the program consists of three parts including student assessment, fitness activities, and nutrition.
Student assessments will be conducted by a hospital nurse/instructor who will also teach strength and cardio classes 12-16 hours a week, in collaboration with the school site teacher. The program will begin with Jamestown and Curtis Creek Elementary Schools.
"The two key elements of this program are activity and nutrition, with a focus on students being more physically fit and having better eating habits, "said Joe Silva, Tuolumne County Schools Superintendent. "Fit for the Future will be funded for a minimum of three years and will come from Tuolumne County Schools in the amount of $50,000."
