Great Year For Sierra Snowpack
Sacramento, CA - The Sierra Nevada snowpack water level is 165 percent of average for the date.
"This year is probably in the top ten when it comes to all-time snow depth and water content," says Ted Thomas, Department of Water Resources Spokesperson. "It is a very heavy snowpack, and what we're hoping now is that the snow doesn't melt too quickly, but slowly through the early spring and summer."
The snowpack was helped by last week's heavy storm system that passed through California. DWR electronic sensors show that the Northern Sierra is 173 percent, the Central Sierra is 164 percent and the Southern Sierra is 159 percent.
Last year at this time the snowpack water level was 106 percent of normal. The DWR has been measuring the snowpack totals for around 80 years.
