Sacramento, CA - A new California law going into effect next year will require middle and high school students to be vaccinated against whooping cough.

The California Health Department reports that all students entering 7th through 12th grade will be required to show proof of a "Tdap" booster shot. The requirement applies to both public and private schools. The legislation was signed into law by Governor Schwarzenegger.

This year California had over 7,800 confirmed cases of whooping cough, resulting in 10 infant deaths.
