Sugar Pine Trail Construction Starting Soon?
Twain Harte, CA -- Work on an early phase of a proposed 25.8 mile bicycle and pedestrian trail through Tuolumne County could start in the coming months.
The Tuolumne County Supervisors will accept bids from contractors until October 22nd for Phase 1A of a trail that will follow the historic Sugar Pine Railroad Grade. Information from the Tuolumne County Public Works Department shows that the long term plan is for the trail to run from Tuolumne to Strawberry, but Phase 1A construction (one mile) will run from East Avenue in Twain Harte to Gurney Station Road in the Black Oak Estates.
As much as $250,000 is available for Phase 1A through the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, but bids for the work are expected to come back much lower. The initial construction phase requires no right of way acquisitions and has been environmentally cleared through the NEPA process.
Contractors will have a limited window to do work. As part of the NEPA environmental permitting, all vegetation removal on the trail must be conducted between September 1st and January 31st to avoid potential disturbance to migratory birds during their nesting and breeding season. In addition, safety railing and any associated work on the Gurney Trestle must be conducted between September 30th and March 15th of the construction year when cliff swallow nests are unoccupied.
